When you use MakeLifeEasy, you keep track of two main lists: your needs and your assets.

Needs

A need is an item that's on your shopping list, or will be in the future. You buy an asset because you need it, right? But, in most cases, once the asset is gone, the need lives on. In MakeLifeEasy, your need list is your smart shopping list. It's smart because it keeps track of when you need to buy more of something, what's a good price to pay, and how sellers have performed for you in the past. Using MakeLifeEasy, you can build your need list slowly, as you buy assets, or quickly, if you decide to organize a set of needs all at once. Either way, your need list is alive -- growing, shrinking, and changing to match your current situation and lifestyle.

Needs can be arranged in a "tree" of folders much like files on your computer are arranged in a tree of folders. This make them easier to manage and allows you to get useful reports by folder. For example, you can compare your cost per day of maintaining your vegetable garden vs. buying fresh vegetables. Then add in the time you spend (either loving it or hating it), and maybe you'll decide to do more of one and less of the other.

Assets

In MakeLifeEasy, an asset is anything and everything you own. When you buy a product, it becomes your asset. You buy an asset to "cover" a need. You don't have to shop for that need again until the assets that cover it now are about to run out, wear out, or expire.

Assets in MakeLifeEasy are either supplies, durables, or apparel:

  • For supplies, MakeLifeEasy keeps a smart shopping list that helps you manage your inventory, reorder the right amounts at good prices, get good offers from stores, and simplify buying overall.

  • For durables, MakeLifeEasy keeps an asset list to help you track your total asset value, maintain your durables correctly, replace them when they need to be replaced, and sell them when you no longer want them.

  • There's actually a third type of asset, apparel (or reused assets). MakeLifeEasy's apparel management ability is still evolving. We provide limited support for apparel right now, but we'll be dramatically improving it in the near future. You can enter your apparel assets now to get the limited benefits and to start tracking your apparel usage patterns.

  • You can also manage services in MakeLifeEasy. The application itself provides more information on this topic.
