How to...
Add a Need Folder

  • See Frequently Asked Questions on How To topics.

You use need folders to organize your needs. You can add these directly (in order to actively construct a tree of folders to hold your needs), or you can add them indirectly (automatically) when adding new needs.

Try to use standard need folders as much as possible.

Using standard need folders will maximize the analysis and shopping benefits MakeLifeEasy can provide for you. See In Depth: Standardizing Your Folders and need consistency for more information. Two of the methods described below help you to add standard folders.

There are several places where need folders can be added, depending on the situation:

    1. To create initial shopping lists, or to add to your existing shopping lists, you can add several needs folders at once, either before or after entering any assets, using the Add Many Needs < page. This method adds the need folders indirectly when you add needs: if you're adding a need from the list and it's in a folder that doesn't exist, that folder will be added for you automatically. These are standard need folders, so you get the benefits of using them.

    2. To view, revise, and organize your need folder tree, you can add, rename, move, and delete individual need folders using the Need Browser page. This method adds the need folders indirectly when you add needs: if you're adding a need from the list and it's in a folder that doesn't exist, that folder will be added for you automatically. Standard need folders are not shown on this page, so use caution when modifying your need folder tree in order to avoid needless deviation from the standard folders and needs.

    3. When you add a new need using the Add a Need < page, and you specify one or more folders for the need that do not yet exist, the folder(s) will be automatically be created when you create the need. This page shows standard need folders interleaved with your actual need folders. Try to use the standard need folders as much as practical so you get the benefits of using them.
